In 1990, after 20 years of practice in Intellectual Property Law, Luis Fernando Matos founded the firm Matos & Associados – Advogados. Since the beginning of his career, Mr. Matos concentrated his practice in protecting and defending the intellectual property rights of foreign companies in Brazil, working previously in two prestigious law firms in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. He specialized in litigation involving trademarks, patents, copyright and entertainment law, using his extensive knowledge of Intellectual Property and Civil Procedure Law to his advantage.
With the strengthening of globalization, increasing world trade and greater integration of Brazil from the 2000s, trade relations have intensified and Brazil too has become a prime destination for investment not only in general business but also in research and development. This allowed Matos & Associados – Advogados to grow together with the country.
In January 2002, after 10 years of activity in the firm, Luis Fernando Matos Jr. began to play the role of managing partner. Around this time, two other lawyers who began their careers in the firm were admitted as partners.
In the last decade, the practice of Intellectual Property Law has changed significantly. In the past, the main task in the firms was to obtain trademark registrations or patents; gradually clients began to demand action on a huge range of services, such as intangible assets, intellectual property and entertainment law. In this scene, Matos & Associados – Advogados seeks lasting professional relationships based on authoritative strategic assessment, always working to build up an extensive intellectual property portfolio.
Matos & Associados – Advogados was ranked, for the second consecutive year, in 3rd place as the most admired firm in the “Análise Advocacia 500” Award in the segment of Intellectual Property Law.
